Garage Sale Through Internet: Ho to earn money and declutter your home at the same time

Selling used items such as clothing, furniture, electronics, or books is becoming increasingly popular. It’s an excellent way to declutter your space while helping others find what they need. In this post, I’ll share some benefits and tips for occasional selling.

Benefits

  1. Earn Extra Money with Minimal Time and Effort
Selling unused items can bring in a decent income with minimal time and effort if you’re organized. For example, I’ve earned 300$ net so far, and the total time I’ve invested is less than 10 hours.

  2. Declutter Your Home or Storage Space
Getting rid of old and unused items automatically helps clean up your home, making it more comfortable and enjoyable to live in.

  3. Eco-Consciousness
Selling used items is an eco-friendly approach to consumption. Instead of throwing items away, you’re giving them a second life, reducing waste, and contributing to a more sustainable lifestyle.

  4. Building Consumer Awareness
Engaging in occasional sales helps you become more mindful about your purchases. You’ll start considering whether you really need new items or if buying used or reusing what you already have is a better option.

  5. Learning and Gaining Experience in Online Sales
Starting with occasional sales can act as a live “mini-course” on online selling, customer interaction, and more. This experience could later help you launch your own business, such as an online store.

Tips

  1. What to Sell
Don’t limit yourself—if an item complies with the platform’s rules, it’s worth listing.

However, avoid selling items with very low value. Packaging materials like envelopes and boxes cost money, so selling low-value items might not be worth the time or effort.

For such items, consider grouping them into sets. For instance, I had three small cork spice jars, each worth 3-4 PLN. Selling them individually wasn’t profitable, but as a set, it made more sense. If an item has no pairing possibilities and no significant value, it’s better to discard it.

  2. Where to Source Items

    • Your Home: The most obvious option is to go through your home. You’ll know best what’s no longer needed and worth selling.
    • Family and Friends: Old books, clothes, etc., can often be sourced from family or friends. For example, I took several bags of books and forgotten clothes from my family home and successfully sold them.
    • Thrift Stores: These are great places to find high-quality clothes, books, toys, and home items at affordable prices. After cleaning and presenting them well in your listings, you can sell them for a profit.
    • Outlets and Clearance Sales: Stores often sell end-of-line collections, damaged packaging, or customer returns at attractive prices. These items can be resold for a profit.
  3. Additional Tips

    • Ship Packages “on the Way”: Avoid making special trips to the parcel machine just to send one package. Send packages during your regular errands, like walking the dog, commuting to work, or going shopping.
    • Reuse Packaging: Keep the boxes from your online orders, flatten them, and store them in one place. This will save you money in the long run, as buying new boxes or bubble mailers at the post office can be costly.
    • Save Packing Fillers: Never buy bubble wrap if you can avoid it. Keep any packing materials from your own deliveries, and use free flyers or newspapers as fillers by crumpling them.
    • Buy in Bulk: For consistent items, it’s worth buying packing supplies in bulk. For example, around 70% of my inventory consists of books and console games, most of which fit into a specific size of bubble mailer. I know it’s more cost-effective to order 50-100 of these mailers online rather than buying them one by one at the post office every time I get an order.

Selling your unused items occasionally can be financially rewarding, environmentally friendly, and a great way to free up space in your home. With a bit of organization and effort, you can turn your unused belongings into a valuable side income!
